The Diner Finder is the Internet's best source of real diner information.
That's right, folks. This is no April fools joke.
We began By The Way in 2001 as an effort to keep alive what we always saw a great idea, that is, to repopularize the diner and similar great American traditional institutions and commercial venues. Back in 2000, publisher Randy Garbin sold the magazine, then called Roadside, to Ball Publishing of Batavia, Illinois; the new arrangement produced two issues. Then, in February 2001, just after the release of Issue #31, Ball Publishing halted operations and folded the title.
In the years since, Ball Publishing has effectively abandoned the trademark. According to Federal law, common-law trademarks expire after three years of disuse. As of this year, the Roadside Magazine trademark reenters the public domain. We have therefore opted to re-acquire it, and have registered it with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Our magazine now continues under its original name, more or less from where we left off, making this Issue #32. We look forward to at least another decade of exploration of the great American roadside. Thanks again for all your support!
