Never in my adult lifetime have I seen so much press about the prospect of expanding our passenger rail system. Finally, after nearly a half-century or more of complete and utter neglect, we as a society have turned our attention to the prospect of restoring what was once the greatest passenger rail system in world history. The United States once boasted more than 250,000 miles of passenger rail lines at its peak in the early 19oos. Today, that figure has fallen to somewhere around a tenth of that, because we adopted a transportation policy that wrapped two-ton, carbon-spewing machines around single individuals and put them on a system of city-destroying highways.
