Last week I was in the LA area and made a stop at the new Bob’s Broiler in Downey. This was the original Harvey’s Broiler from 1958 that was destroyed illegally in 2007. Now I know Roadside’s stance on chain restaurants, but I think the outcome is acceptable. With all the outcry about what happened to the Broiler an operator of several Bob’s Big Boys stepped up to the plate. With the watchful eyes of the City of Downey and local citizens an architech designed a good replacement to be built on the original footprint. The outcome was not too bad. Most of the original signage was restored allthough a Bob’s Big Boy statue now greets passers by. Inside an overly and rather poorly restored Seeburg 201 from 1958 with typical 50’s –60’s music sits with an out of order sign behind the hostess station. Now the important part, the food and service. Once we got our waiter service was fast and efficient, food was cooked properly and served hot. I got plenty of brewed iced tea refills. Bottom line, I think a good job at replacing what once was, has been done.
