New Bedford, Massachusetts -- Our recent visit to the Shawmut Diner felt almost like a reunion of sorts. Roadside has enjoyed a healthy relationship with this landmark diner almost since our first publication.
We returned their for an appearance on the Fox News Diner Tuesday segment, but we also reconnected with Phil and Celeste Paleologos after several years since our last visit. We've always recognized the Paleologos family as one of the warmest, friendliest owners in the business. It's hard -- if not impossible -- to leave the diner without a big bear hug from Phil.
During our visit, Phil delivered the news that he's soon returning to radio. Long-time readers may remember that just over ten years ago, Phil launched a morning talk show, delivered from a small booth constructed right inside the diner. This time, Phil will take to the road and stop in at other restaurants around the Boston area, and perhaps beyond. Look for more info on that development soon.
We also want to mention that Phil and Celeste will be celebrating another kind of milestone. Their diner will be 54 years old this year. The Shawmut diner was ordered from the O'Mahony plant in 1953 and delivered/installed and opened in 1954.

In 1981, Phil and Celeste began renting the diner from the original owners, buying it outright in 1986. As of this year, the happy couple will have operated it for 27 years, making 2008 the magical year that Phil & Celeste have operated their O'Mahony for more years than the previous -- and original -- owner.
We think that kind of longevity -- especially in this business -- is definitely cause for celebration. We raise our cups to you!
