The Diner Finder is the Internet's best source of real diner information.
Well, the future has arrived. During our first visit, we did see a number of empty storefronts on Broughton Street. Some of the occupied stores had locally based, marginal businesses. No longer. Broughton -- and most of the other streets -- show few vacancies and many chain stores. Think what you might about that, but we liked all the feet this puts on the city's sidewalks.
We paid visits to two spots in town, but only Lulu's Chocolate Bar made an impression upon us. Lulu's unique concept combines cocktails and baked goods in a swank setting with funky tunes. A dessert case greeted us as we walked in the door, so we had little choice but to spend a good five minutes scanning the mouth watering confections -- from rich chocolate cake to tangy torts to a selection of cremes brulee.
Pulling up to the bar, we browsed the extensive (and chocolate-laden) drink menu, and from it I chose a cup of drinking chocolate with the peach cheesecake while Mrs. Roadside ordered a coffee to go with her creme brulee sampler. She selected wisely, but my order was not only far too rich, but the too-moist cheesecake disappointed. Cheesecake should not have the consistency of custard.
Despite this, we'd happily revisit Lulu's if given the chance, and given how much we love Savannah, we hope that day comes soon.
Next time: Some other must-visits and honorable mentions during our visit.
