Home Bruce on the Backroads

Artscape: Baltimore, MD

If you are a native of the city of Baltimore and the surrounding area then most likely Artscape is a true indication that summer has arrived. In July, for one glorious weekend the city of Baltimore shuts down a few city blocks at Mt. Royal and Charles St. (a few blocks near the art college) and has a huge, free block party devoted to art in any, and every, shape or form. If you like visual art; they have it, performance art; sure, music; well thats their huge draw, sculpture; oh yea. A few blocks of crowded street become transformed into an urban art gallery, performance area, and music festival all in one. Artscape is one of the times it is great to live in, or near Baltimore.

Welcome to Bruce on the Backroads

Bruce on the Backroads is an attempt by Bruce H. Voge III to look into the sport of road tripping and the concept of not only going to places, but doing things.

Bruce has spent the majority of his life trying to be, in his words, "the most interesting person I know" which has been an uphill climb that has lead Bruce to visiting every oddball tourist trap he can get his car (or someone elses) to, as well as exploring small market sports (minor league baseball, arena football etc.), going to goofball street festivals, eating at greasy spoons (some are even diners… we need to keep it topical) and watching more than one folk jam band at an eco-street fair. We hope at "On the Backroads" to have a few features that you will come to know and love, including:

Blobfest: Phoenixville, PA

I like to consider myself a HUGE fan of bad media. I scour the airwaves, or better phrased the cablelines for television that you can clearly tell was made by a maximum crew of eight people, most of whom were half asleep. I love "The Stuff", a movie about an attack food replacement created by the Devil. I loved the 1960's Batman, and I love "The Blob."

"The Blob" is a 1958 cinematic masterpiece about a meteor that rocketed to earth, and when poked with a stick revealed a creature who is ready to devour all of humanity at a painfully slow rate, starting with the old man who poked it with a stick. The creature is a Blob, and no one in the movie including star Steven McQueen (yes that Steve McQueen) can figure out how to describe this terror. It is everything that makes the concept of the Midnight Movie so romantic. Its the kind of film that after all these years you can laugh at, and you think they might might have been laughing with you. "The Blob" was filmed in and around Phoenixville, PA.
