Thanks to Dirk Burhan's whimsical but heartwarming idea, I'd embarked on a whirlwind trip from Philadelphia to Harrisburg, Missouri to share pancakes with a few dozen people. Last year, Dirk staged his first pancake party, and I vowed not to miss it if it came around again. This year, I had the time and more than enough desire, so yesterday I hit the road to Missouri. Sadly, I have just enough time for this trip, so I have to keep the exploration to a minimum.
Readers here may remember Dirk as an occasional contributor and as the author of Crunch, the definitive history of potato chips. As I write, I've never actually met the guy, but we maintain our friendship through Facebook, and I can say that he's probably the most interesting kindred spirit I've yet to meet. Today, I plan to close that circle.
As I said, with exploration at a minimum, I had to be very selective about my side trips off of I-70 so far. Most notably, however, I did venture into downtown Dayton, Ohio. I have posted my photos at the RoadsideOnline Flickr feed seen after the jump.
